As we all know, living in rural Rutland can bring huge challenges that most of us have experienced at some time. Often, simple tasks can seem massive hurdles, particularly to those older people who may be suffering ill health or bereavement. However, help can often come in very simple ways:•Collecting a prescription•Putting out the wheelie bin•Providing a warm welcome and hot drink to someone on their return home from hospital•Reading the post•Getting some shopping in•Walking a dog for the short term•Clearing paths or blocked drainsRutland Community Spirit has been operating at a low level in Rutland since 2008, providing the link between elderly people in need and local residents willing to provide support. The team have helped over 300 people to maintain independent living in their own homes since it’s launch and has just secured a further 3 years funding through the Lottery, to ensure that project activity is embeded in local communities. The Project team are looking to collate a list of local people across the county who would be willing to respond to an appeal for help when situations arise or get more involved by planning social activities. Most deeds will be simple and short term but could make the difference between someone remaining in their own home or moving in to care. There are two open evenings for potential volunteers to meet the team and find out about how they can get help out in their own village, either by volunteering individually or by setting up a Good Neighbour Scheme which will serve the whole village.Everyone is welcome to attend at either session on:Thursday19thApril2012– South Luffenham Village Hall at 6pmThursday3rdMay2012– Langham Village Hall at 6pmAlternatively, for a confidential chat, contact the Project ManagerSue Renton on 01572 720282 or click here to email Sue
